inspired

This weekend my friend Stephanie and I saw "Nancy Newhall: A Literacy of Images" at the Museum of Photographic Arts. Wow! I left feeling so inspired; Newhall's photos were new to me and therefore really exciting. The show also included some classics such as Eliot Porter, Weston (both Brett and Edward), Lisette Model, Helen Levitt and Ansel Adams. I don't spend enough time looking back at to the history of photography, but this show served as an excellent reminder to pull those books off my shelves.

There was also a special bonus exhibt, "Picturing the Process: Landscape Through Time and Space" which included prints by some of my favorites: John Pfhal and Edward Burtynsky. Unfortunately, the Newhall portion of the exhibit is already down, but the landscapes will be up until the 1st. Go there now!

I shot several rolls of film and the images above are a few of the digital images. Film will be posted ASAP.

my old surf spot

Whihala Beach, IN. 10-14-04, 8:15 AM

I love this Polaroid and I thought I'd share it here. I don't know why it scans so weird... it looks very painterly. Oh, there's nothing like an original!

Anyway, the waves were less than stellar, but it was such an adventure to paddle out at dawn in 30 degree water/20 degree air (this particular day was not that cold), alone. Talk about stoke! All it took was a 15-20 kts wind from the north to get me pumped for days. Ahh, lake surfing. I hope I surf there again someday.

Oh, for those unfamiliar with the Midwest: this beach is on Lake Michigan, on the other side of Chicago. You can barely see the skyline on the horizon towards the right side of the frame.

NinePlus Women's Wetsuit Review: Catsuit 2009

Alright, this has nothing to do with photography, but I had a hard time finding a review of this wetsuit so I thought I'd post this in case anyone else is looking for it. I'll try to keep it brief:

During my first surf, I gave the suit a 7 out 0f 10. It felt awesome, arms and chest were SO warm they didn't even feel wet. The wool that lines the inside of this suit is amazing, and you can tell it's made from good neoprene. After the first session, my only gripes were the collar was really irritating my neck, it letting some water in down my back, and it was REALLY (I mean REALLY) hard to get out of. I attributed all of that to needing to break in the new suit and figured it'd be fine by a couple of surfs.

But, by my third session, there was so much water flooding in through the neck I had a pool of it down my back and around my stomach between waves. When I moved my leg to get myself turned around, water flushed up the leg. Turning turtle caused water to flood in through both arms.

Ultimately, I returned the suit (thank you Ken at Icons of Surf for being so understanding and customer-service oriented. this surf shop ROCKS) because I can't justify spending $300 on something that lets in that much water.

The wetsuit looks super hot. I got lots of compliments on that. But this suit is for someone with a thicker neck than mine, or something... I'm gonna have to stick with a mainstream suit for now. The Patagonia suit would have been another alternative if the neck didn't feel like choke-hold. Hopefully this review is useful to someone out there. Oh, here is the NinePlus description of the suit, FYI.

UPDATE March 2009: I ended up with the women's Billabong Solution Gold 3/2 - this is by far the best wetsuit I've ever owned (compared to Roxy, O'Neill, 9plus & RipCurl). I love it!

new photos for the new year. ON FILM!

that's right - the hassleblad is back baby! my first photo shoot of the year took place last week with Cori and Maria. i am exhausted right now but i must post these immediately as it has been waaaaay too long since my last post.

the one below is a random picture I made before I met up with c+m, while the sun was still out. After making this image I discovered there was a woman named Liz inside the pink van ('78, custom color). She is 5 years into a 19 year trek across the country. Holy smokes! Lucky Liz.
