rough drafts

my friend jill is a designer and makes awesome custom wetsuits for women. we did these pictures in hopes of making some images that she can use to promote her California Candy wetsuit line, (incredibly well made with japanese neoprene!) and that i can include in Sirens. images from my first rough edit. will be photographing her again soon...

ps- sorry, kate, the wetsuits are not sold online yet. jill's got the only ones in existence (there is a killer purple and green one too!) they are expected to go to retail in may of '09 as far as i know.

art show: November 6 - 20, Venice, CA

TOMS makes great shoes and has a great cause: for every pair of shoes you buy, they'll donate a pair to a child in need. I'm honored to exhibit my photographs in this show. Thanks to Ryan Tatar for hooking a sista up!

Garett from TOMS just got back from a shoe drop in Argentina, and has some great stories to share from his trip. I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you about it at the show! Check it out if you can - the show will stay up for two weeks after the reception.

The Grass is Greener Project

Check out this new blog, Grass is Greener, that launched this week - it's very worthy of your time. I love that fact that it celebrates the old school goodness of film and getting back to the roots of other forms of artwork (and it makes me feel guilty for not shooting film anymore...that will have to change). Oh, and of course I love that it has to do with surfing :)

Kyle Lightner is the mastermind behind this project, and his personal site is pretty groovy too. Check it out here.

Here is the project mission statement:

Grass is Greener was birthed with only one goal in mind- gettin' back to basics. through time, & the influence of modern technology, we've lost so many tools & techniques that have helped craft what so many of us as surfers, artists, & musicians, love & thrive off of to this day; blurry washed-out photographs, non-saturated & faded art, less friendly wave-riding equipment & raw music recordings from our recent golden eras; it all leads us to the past.

Grass is Greener is our way of returning to our roots.. showcasing photographs, art, wave-riding, shapes, lifestyles, musicianship, natural flow, positive energy, creations, artists & advocates alike that fully represent & live out the past; when the art was pure, the styles were innovative, the music was raw, the boards were basic, & in both the photos & film....the grass truly was greener.

Right on.

shakas and singlefins

i am a frequent checker-outer of ryan tatar's blog, shakas and singlefins. check out his photography here. i dig his work because it's surf photography with a punk rock/street kick to it. a lot of the surf photography i see in the world is softer than this and i enjoy the edge ryan puts in his work.

while meeting with chris at surfindian gallery, ryan came by and i was stoked to get to meet him before he took off on his cross country adventure to the east coast. i can't wait to see the images he makes on his journey and in his new home.

jr

JR is the first lady i met in SDSL and i've wanted to photograph her ever since . when i met her as the president of one of the few women's surf clubs [she has since stepped down], i thought she was awesome. then i found out she prefers waves 15'+ and knew she was awesome. she shreds!!! we had a fun time taking pics before and after a short session at cardiff reef.

finally!

lisa was one of the first friends i made here and only just this week did i get around to taking some pictures of her for my project. these images are very similar but her expression is so different- i dig 'em both. i'm close to getting everything together for my deadline, so i'll have to choose then...

holly & merrick

holly is a surf mama to one year old merrick. she is also a personal trainer, a coach for SDSL, and a great surfer - she recently got sponsored by proteck! Talk about a balancing act... holly was nice enough to take some time out of her sunday morning to allow me to make some photos. this is my favorite of the bunch:

post surf bonfire

after work i went for a surf session and bonfire with Julie and her friends. i witnessed the best surfing i've ever seen up close in my life. these girls can TEAR IT UP. it was SO fun & inspiring!!!

i spent the daylight hours surfing and most of the bonfire socializing so i didn't get as many pictures as i would have liked. but no matter- i had a fantastic evening.

jeannette & diana

my friend calvin introduced me to two very cool women, jeannette and diana. to be quite honest, i am too tired to think clearly enough to write something that would do justice to my experience with them. i can quickly say that this week has taught me that these photos work much better if the subject is expecting me (rather than randomly approaching strangers) and that meeting people like jeanette, diana, and all the other women i've photographed so far gives me an inspiration i hadn't found before. i feel renewed after every photo session, just like a surf session. so here are the pics- please give me any feedback you might have, positive or negative- my editing date is approaching... i will comment more on this session again soon, i hope.

i've been wanting to incorporate more still life(s) into the series, and new environments. it feels so good to be going in the right direction. by the way, this photo session was followed up by a short but sweet surf session at the campgrounds - super fun! i can't wait for the winter...
