it's me!

I'd really like to incorporate some environmental portraits into this project, but I'm finding it hard to invite myself into stranger's houses. I had the urge to make a picture, so I photographed myself.

Check It...

Awww yeah! I'm so stoked, this is my first exhibition in over a year, and my first time showing my work in Cali. The show runs from Dec 10 - Jan 3, with an opening party on the 15th. The address is 222 Wisconsin Ave in Oceanside.

The party should be great- food, drinks, hand painted & hand shaped surfboards, skateboards, surf resin jewelry, handmade bags and my photos! Basically an awesome mix of talent and goodies. Please come check it out and help me celebrate!

Thanks to all of the ladies who have been a part of my project so far, Holeman Surf Designs, and the very talented Greg Lantz.

I'm still looking for subjects, so if you want to be a siren, let me know ;)

holy smokes

san diego county is on fire, literally. i've never seen anything like this. the first we saw of it was sunday after a surf at pipes- greg, my dad, step mom (visiting from Chicago) and i left a clear and sunny cardiff and headed to the brigantine in del mar - no more than 10 miles from our house. on the way, visibility was greatly reduced, we smelled smoke and then drove right into it. the view from the brig was gone- all you could see was smoke. at the bar, we heard there was a fire in ramona causing the smoke. the santa ana winds, which make for horrible fire conditions, kept up all afternoon into the night. we woke up monday morning to strong winds, strange yellow light and the smell of smoke. ash covered all the window sills in our house and unfortunately, anything in front of them, including my epson 3200 printer (seems to be OK, thankfully!). after sweeping the ash and dust covering the back porch, i sat outside to have coffee with my dad and within 2 minutes there was a layer of ash floating in my drink. as the sun rose it looked like this:

greg went off to work around 8 and we watched the news on TV- 7 fires, 300,000 acres burned, 250,000 evacuated from their homes. greg called and said one side of palomar airport road was sunny blue skies and the other was pitch black smoke. he was sent home from work by 9. i went the studio in solana beach to cancel appointments for the day after my dad and demi headed to LA. as i pulled into my studio parking lot it looked like it was snowing ash. the smoke was blocking out the sun and it was super dark and eerie. the lines at the gas stations reminded me like september 11th and all of the street lights were out.

greg and i decided to leave home and head north, just in case. the news said not to wait for the reverse 911 call and to get out if we could. so we packed up the pets and our most important things, and left. here is what we saw:

san marcos is on fire

10:00am- we were pretty happy to leave that behind us

thankfully we have some friends in dana point, so after checking out san onofre and crystal cove in OC, we headed to their house where syd and charlie (dog and cat, respectively) could relax while greg, andrew and i surfed at doheny followed by a yummy dinner and hot tubbing. THANK YOU ANDREW AND ERIN!!! we had a good but short nights sleep and headed home at 630 am - so we could make it in time for work - and here are some views on the way home:

black smoke hanging over san diego county as we headed home

a fire on the side of the 5, between Camp Pendleton and Oceanside

yes, we actually drove into that

turns out neither greg or i could go to work (CMG was shut down, Solana Beach under mandatory evacuation) so here we are at home, taking care of business and hanging out. the sky is still yellow but we can breathe outside now. it will be awesome when this is all over. so far 515,000 people have been evacuated, at least 600 homes have been lost. we are keeping our fingers crossed for our fellow san diegans.

unless you'd really like to know

i won't bother explaining my absence. it's not that interesting anyway. all that counts is that i FINALLY got some negs scanned! below are the images i dig from 3 rolls i had scanned- so far there are 23 rolls. i like the results from the v750, so next month i will buy my own and scan the rest. yeah! needless to say, this is a slow going project. thanks for staying tuned :)

so as far as these images go, i made these with my hasselblad. all that i've posted up to this point are my digital "proofs" (which is why you might feel like you've seen some of these before). some of the digi pics turned out better than the film.

anyway, what do you think? yay? nay? you don't give a hay? i'd love your feedback.

holeman surf designs

yesterday i had the pleasure of photographing andrea, the owner, operator, and surfboard painter for Holeman Surf Designs. i met up with her after her session at wisconsin ave & she was kind enough to let me into her home and studio and brand new surf shop (222 Wisconsin Ave, Oceanside). i had a field day with my camera! all of the spaces were so inspirational and it felt incredibly good to be shooting somewhere other than the beach or a parking lot!

i feel like this was a breakthrough in the project, being able to photograph a "surf space", instead of just photographing someone during a 2 minute interaction in passing. i'd love to do more of these. so if you know anyone who'd be willing, i would love to do more still lifes and portraits without people if you know what i mean.

i can't wait to post all of my film images, especially from this session. they are getting processed as we speak and negs should be scanned soon. i promise! thank you andrea and jp :)

i wish i was more politically inclined

but alas, i am not. i don't have anything wise or insightful to say about today. i wish i did.

i'll always remember the panicked wake up call i got from my brother demanding i turn on the tv and him repeatedly asking me where our dad was. dad traveled a lot for work at the time. i still can't think about september 11th for more than 5 minutes without needing some "alone time". the image of people jumping out of the t0wers is burned in my head.

its ridiculous that all these years have passed and its still not over. i can't wait for the next election.

on a brighter note, here are some more pics from the past week. i am still slacking on getting my negs scanned! yikes! ok, ok, i'll stick out my hand so you can slap it with your ruler. there are new pics from the underwater cam, i just need to get my butt in gear and get them off the camera. on an even brighter note, i had an excellent sessoin at swami's this afternoon. my first time surfing there!

waterproof digital?! who knew....

yay! the first images from my new waterproof digital camera are here. i have a lot of learning to do about this machine, so hopefully the images will just get better. these don't all pertain to my project, but here they are for your viewing pleasure....

i have a hard time thinking of titles

today i had my first "arranged" photo session with a woman who responded to my craigslist post. it was great to have someone to photograph that already knew what i was up to and was willing to be photographed. THANK YOU! the digital images i shot didn't really turn out very well so i'm hoping for more from the hasselblad. i did get the waterproof camera (hooray!) which as taught me that i need to choose between shooting and surfing because i can't do both while i'm in the water. i did get some cool shots from that camera but i'll have to post them later.

some other ladies responded to my ad, but i haven't had a chance to meet them yet. it's been a busy week. i finally got my epson 3800 set up so i can start printing these bad boys! or girls i should say :) just as soon as i get some negs scanned...i know, i know. i've been saying it for too long. i will do it by the end of this week. deal? deal.

now, i know i have other pictures of feet, but i can't resist the nailpolish and surf gear combo. i'll narrow it down when the time comes.

where are you?

this is a fun little map that shows where the people who visit my blog are visiting from! nothing to do with photography but i enjoy it:

i haven't seen her in action but i can tell she rips

boy have i been slacking with my posts this week! i haven't been shooting much because i started a new job, and i want to see the film i've shot so far before i continute, just to get an idea of where i am. but i've yet to see the film beacuse i'm trying to decide whether:

a) i should pay to have someone scan my negs
b) get my own scanner (if so, which one?! i can't afford a film scanner right now)
c) i should just bite the bullet and ditch the film completely and shoot digital only.

ugh.

i would like to take this chance to give a shout out to my super smart and supportive boyfriend Greg for patiently listening to me mull these things over and giving me his thoughts on the matter. it's an endless debate between analog and digital lizzie.

any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

i shot these north of the campground this morning.....

I am going to start doing one of these (immediately above) of every woman with her board. I think it say something about their personality and as a series would be pretty interesting. Thanks for the reminder Paul!! Of course I'll keep shooting whatever else I find interesting too. Right now I'd like to try some different locations, more on the beach, less in the parking lot. It's hard to decide to shoot and not to surf when I'm right on the water :) Thank goodness I have an Optio W30 coming to me so I won't have to choose as much anymore.

I shot these earlier this week but I don't really like them to be honest. The color is too washed out in the first image. The second image is alright, but I wish I could see her face. I love photo projects :) It's good to be back.
